My intent here is to share information about fresh food sources available in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Difficult economic times and negative changes in our environmental picture are forcing many of us to think differently about where our foods come from. We are also looking for ways to have less of an impact on the environment, so here we go. Jump in anywhere you feel you need to, especially if I've missed something.

Here's a great page with lots of information and links to farms, sources of food, markets. Buy Fresh, Buy Local

Attend a great farmer's market in Harrisonburg, VA on Tues & Sat, March-December. Harrisonburg Farmer's Market Lots of neat vendors with beautiful produce, flowers, herbs, and gorgeous crafts/artwork.

A great local source of meats. Heartland Harvest Farms where their focus is to give you the eating experience that connects you….locally, with your community, your farmer, and the soil.

A new grocery co-op is forming in the Staunton area. Valley Market is in the formative stages and would love to have new members. Please visit their site to view their mission and membership benefits.

I would be remiss not to mention my own efforts. Visit my website shenvalleynaturals for your soaps, body cream, dream pillows, laundry detergent and reusable grocery bags.

Another great source of produce and florals is the Shenandoah Valley Produce Auction. I've never been there but would love to check it out.

Yet another resource of local information. Buylocalshenvalley

A great source of local produce and meats is found on the good old Orkney Grade at Shenandoah Farms

Just found out from a friend in Strasburg about a great coffee company in Broadway. They can be found at Downtown Wine & Gourmet in Harrisonburg or you can order on-line. Please visit Lucas Roasting.

Virginia's Production of Tomatoes

Virginia ranked 4th in nation for fresh-market production

Two men walk into a Subway restaurant expecting tomatoes but come up empty.

That could be the start of a joke, but you'd be disappointed with the current punch line — the men say OK, and agree to go home and slice their own tomatoes.

It happened at the Subway on Wal-Mart Drive in Winchester, and shows the adjustments that grocery stores, restaurants and consumers have had to make in the Northern Shenandoah Valley after a nationwide sal… Continue

Local community farming

Shareholders: Local farmer sees success in group growing

By Jessica Coleman -- Daily Staff Writer

FRONT ROYAL — Matt Burch shares his farm with 60 people.

Lei-Kei Farm, named after his two oldest daughters, Leilani and Keilena, is an example of community supported agriculture in the valley. Burch sells shares of his farm, and these shareholders reap the benefits of his harvest weekly.

He delivers boxes of in-season fresh organic fruits and vegetables to them with directions about how to sto… Continue
